Some people will tell you that to travel the world and make beautiful things is impossible.
I believe we should go out and do it anyway.
Hi, my name is Amelia.
I’m a songwriter, traveller, storyteller, and bottle-made red head.
I grew up in Perth, Western Australia, across the road from a regional park, where there were plenty of adventures to be found. I have fond memories of my best friend and I riding our bikes along the trails and around the lake, and getting ourselves into hilarious situations, like the time she did a ghosty off her bike midway down a steep hill…after running over a snake. There was the rope swing we found in a secret clearance tucked away on a hill, which swung out over a steep drop into the bush. We built forts out of fallen tree branches and leaves, and we had ‘sword fights’ with the hard pointy leaves of the many grass trees that grew in the bush. It was paradise for an adventurous, eccentric kid with an overactive imagination.
Despite many wanting to pigeonhole someone like me, I never fit in the box. I loved to dance as a kid, then I took up Tae Kwon Do as a teenager. I played football (soccer) in high school, but was a massive drama nerd. I loved singing and playing guitar, but hardly ever performed in front of people I knew. So when it came time to go to uni, despite the obvious bewilderment and many refrains of “but there’s no way to get a job out of that”, I studied creative music technology, and creative writing. My creative background at uni did in fact help me get my current day job, as a graphic designer and digital printer. So the jokes are on the doubters.
In 2013 I went on my first solo trip to Europe, and it changed my life. Being exposed to new cultures – the music, the art, the landscapes – was both inspirational and rejuvenating.
After having settled into a job that was far less creative and far more monotonous then it sounds, I came back from my trip energised and full of inspiration for my music and a new hobby, photography. The only regret being that I didn’t take my guitar with me!
In 2016 I started a homewares and design business, Wolf & Anchor, with my mum, Penny. Wolf & Anchor is the culmination of seeing a variety of amazing self started businesses on my travels. Companies that provide the unique, and meet the needs of people who want to fill their homes and lives with things that aren’t just mass produced in a factory. This is a movement, and another of ways that travel has affected the way I live.
Whilst it should come as no surprise that I fully believe I can live a fulfilling life making music, creating beautiful things and travelling the world, I also want to inspire others to do the same, to explore, create, and love life.
